![]() ![]() We have the mail slots like Kirkhall shows, but I find them very frustratig - DH never takes his stuff anywhere else! Whereas, I see them as a temporary landing spot - not permanent files. This may be the first place you have to drop trash from the car as you are entering the house. I second the trash/recycling spot - maybe that is what should go in the space drawn for a desk. Or, perhaps, you have a cat that needs a hidden litterbox or a dog bed - I have seen these go under a drop counter. You may also want to think about whether you need additional storage here for off-season items- a box for each persons mittens, hats, etc. I think the 12" drawers as drawn would funtion OK - remember you will be keeping chapstick, gum, sunglasses, note pads, and possibily small tools here. I don't know where your office desk will be, but if it is not here, you could do some preliminary filing as soon as the mail opens. I would do another drawer stack - perhaps with the bottom drawer on one side as a file cabinet. I would not leave room in the bottom for desk functionality. Also have hooks on the wall for the daily keys. Inside the upper cab doors, you can do command hooks for keys that aren't needed frequently. The mail slots as drawn should work well - I have them built in to upper cabinets at my office and use them all the time. I would definitely get upper cabs if you want it to look neat. Hi Momto3Es - I plan to have the same "drop zone" in my mudroom with a charging station separate - in the kitchen. Do you have other ideas for cabinetry? Pics of what has worked (or not worked) for you? I know the mudroom will be a very busy place getting three kids out the door to school and getting them back home in the afternoons. I really want this space to be functional as my kids get older. If you have other suggestions about how you use your desk area, please share. We do not need a charging station or computer station here. or at least have wall space to have a key holder when kids are older, a place to keep all that school paperwork (I used to be a teacher before I had my first DS- I know there's a ton of paperwork!)Ĥ. temporarily hold paperwork that needs filed, signed, mailed, etcģ. I also think those 12" drawers will be really narrow.ġ. Right now it's a desk, and I am sure it will NEVER be used as a desk space. I do think we should do some sort of cabinetry here, but I don't know if this design is quite right. It got me thinking a lot about what I need out of this space. To see the details of that build check out our post here. Our realtor looked over our final floorplans yesterday and he mentioned that we may be wasting a lot of money by putting built in cabinetry here. You probably also noticed that we installed new craftsman style trim along with our built ins. After the cushion, the finishing touch will be installing a new overhead light fixture. I can do a great many things, but sewing isn’t one of them! Maybe you guys can give me some pointer in that area. I’ll be sure to post pictures when we get our custom seat cushion in. Detailed plans for all of our builds are coming soon. Let us know if there is something you would like to see. I hope you guys enjoyed this project and found this article helpful. Just set it and forget it! ( It saved a TON of time when I installed drawer pulls and cabinet handles on all of our kitchen and bath cabinets- 39 doors in all) This little guy allows me to put the holes in exactly the same place on each and every door. Rather than make a template for each job, I like to use this cabinet hardware jig. Installing a couple of handles shouldn’t be too hard, but when you’re doing five cabinets or more, there’s a lot of measurements to be made to get it just right.
